[2020 FMEA New Edition Features and Practical Applications]
In 2019, MiDFUN developed the first edition of BKM PLUS based on the new AIAG-VDA-FMEA, upgrading FMEA from the former AIAG 4th Edition to the new VDA edition. Following the revisions and supporting requirements issued in May and October 2019, we added new features such as the structure tree, process flow tree, risk matrix, the seven-step approach, and various related applications. In addition, drawing on the dozens of automotive and semiconductor customers who had adopted MiDFUN’s 4th Edition FMEA since 2015, we integrated the experience of automotive component suppliers in Taiwan and mainland China into the development of the new FMEA edition, releasing the 2020 edition of BKM PLUS.
Apart from a small number of assembly and brand vehicle manufacturers, the vast majority of manufacturers on both sides of the strait are processing companies and component suppliers. Adopting the new FMEA edition the way traditional consulting firms implement it can easily lead to the need to build tens of thousands or more FMEA projects, which cannot be applied or systematized. This problem already arose back in 2010 with MiDFUN’s earlier FMEA edition, where customers had tens of thousands to over a hundred thousand part numbers (the customer made engine gaskets, low-volume high-variety). Previously, only certain special part numbers were required by major manufacturers to have an FMEA; after the system was implemented, the customer wanted an FMEA for every part number. As a result, implementing the system that year required adding more than ten engineers to build the records, and subsequent maintenance of the FMEA-CP also caused considerable difficulties. The new system has resolved this problem at the architectural level.
Beyond featuring the new VDA tables, the new FMEA edition is also compatible with the AIAG 4th Edition. In addition to the seven-step approach and AP, it can be linked with various systems such as CP, SPC, and APQP/PPAP, so that enterprises are not left deriving a single, isolated FMEA that becomes merely an advanced table unable to generate synergy. Beyond DFMEA and PFMEA, it can also create new FMEA types such as MFMEA, FMEA_MSR, FFMEA, and more. This allows enterprises to respond to new requirements and tables in the future while still accommodating their existing data.

We recommend visiting the Latest News section of this website to register for the free online seminar. Adopting the MiDFUN FMEA system enables FMEA to genuinely support the derivation of an enterprise’s DFMEA, PFMEA, and CP, automatically retaining this know-how and accumulated wisdom, categorized, in the enterprise’s knowledge base. This truly lays the foundation for long-term enterprise quality competitiveness and, amid the automated generation of large volumes of data under Industry 4.0, electric vehicles, big data, and the like, effectively and purposefully establishes the correct groundwork for elevating the core system of enterprise knowledge management. This is a long-term effort, but only a solid foundation can support a sturdy high-rise. Let’s keep at it together!!
