First, let us break down the main points of the new edition of FMEA:
1. It is divided into two major categories, the public Foundation FMEA and the project Family FMEA

2. The entire manual is divided into three major sections, DFMEA, PFMEA, and the MSR (MONITOR SYSTEM RESPONSE) for modern automotive electronic sensors and safety devices. MSR is used in DFMEA when severity S>8, where it can serve as a mechanism to reduce safety threats and make vehicle operation safer. For examples, refer to the TCS traction control system and the ABS anti-lock braking device.

3. The seven-step approach runs through all FMEA items. This is also a very important feature of the new edition FMEA. The seven-step approach gives the structure and sequence of FMEA a clearly definable order, reducing differences caused by varying human interpretation.

Secondly, this manual presents many diagrams to help users understand the relationships among the various subsystems in the FMEA tables, allowing relevant personnel to use these supporting diagrams to more clearly understand the relationships among the subsystems described in the tables. However, the diagrams are not mandatory, and they must not overshadow the main content.
